Wi-LAN LAUNCHES VOICE-OVER-IP SOLUTIONS FOR CONVERGED VOICE AND DATA BROADBAND WIRELESS NETWORKS

11/19/2003

New Wireless VoIP Solution Provides Competitive Economic Alternative to Traditional Wired Voice Service

CALGARY, Canada - November 19, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, today launched its new Wireless Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) Solution, which allows transmission of voice communications over Wi-LAN’s broadband wireless access systems with carrier-grade Quality of Service (QoS). The Wireless VoIP Solution provides an extremely competitive economic alternative to traditional wired service for voice traffic, particularly in underserved areas and developing countries, and is an excellent solution to allow competitive local exchange carriers to avoid leased line charges to incumbent carriers. The Wireless VoIP Solution easily integrates with Wi-LAN’s Ultima3 Fixed Wireless Access product series and can be engineered to provide cost effective voice services for up to 7,200 customers per base station.

"Wi-LAN’s Wireless Voice-over-IP Solution is simple and cost-effective to use. It allows customers to establish wireless IP-based networks to carry both voice and data traffic," said Dr. Sayed-Amr El-Hamamsy, President and COO, Wi-LAN Inc. "Convergence, whereby voice and data traffic is transmitted over the same telecommunications network, is a particularly persuasive business application that opens up large new market opportunities for Wi-LAN’s broadband wireless equipment. By directing voice calls over the corporate data network, or by using competitive carrier VoIP services rather than the incumbent local carrier service, enterprises and consumers can significantly reduce their monthly phone bills. As well, they can eliminate the ongoing costs of owning separate voice and data networks, and enable powerful new voice-and-data applications. The benefits of a converged voice and data network combined with the quality, reliability, scalability, security and bandwidth offered by Wi-LAN’s market-leading fixed wireless access products is very compelling for enterprises and service providers alike."

Wireless VoIP service is a competitive economic alternative, particularly in underdeveloped areas where there is no telephone service or very limited telephone service, and for competitive carriers to avoid leased line charges to incumbent local exchange carriers. With Wireless VoIP, telecom service providers are able to quickly and inexpensively establish high quality voice and data networks and provide customer service at very affordable rates. The systems are very flexible and scalable, allowing operators to service single dwelling, multiple dwelling and small-office / home-office (SOHO) customers cost-effectively.

Wi-LAN’s Wireless VoIP Solution is engineered for minimal installation effort and risk for the customer. With the Wireless VoIP solution, enterprises can implement voice services over local area networks and to multiple offices over wide area networks, and service providers can offer voice services to customers over their existing data networks. Wi-LAN’s Wireless VoIP Solution minimizes the bandwidth required for VoIP traffic by reducing the total number of packets used, lowering the likelihood that other congestion on the network will threaten voice quality and reducing the likelihood of lost packets, which can affect voice quality. The combination of VoIP and Wi-LAN’s market-leading fixed wireless access products creates a truly unbeatable Wireless VoIP Solution for converged voice and data networks.
