Vantaa Purchases Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM Based LIBRA Products and Radionet’s Broadband Wireless Network Solutions for Metropolitan Broadband Wireless Network Deployments CALGARY, Canada and VANTAA, Finland - December 4, 2003 - Wi-LAN Inc. (TSX:WIN), a global provider of broadband wireless communications products and technologies, and Radionet Oy, the Wi-Fi Hotzone company that specializes in large-scale outdoor broadband wireless networks, today announced that Vantaa Energy, a full-service energy company based in Vantaa, Finland, has purchased Wi-LAN’s W-OFDM based non-line-of-sight (NLOS) LIBRA fixed wireless access products and Radionet’s broadband wireless equipment for deployment of city-wide broadband wireless networks in the cities of Vantaa, Espoo and Helsinki in Finland. The three cities have a combined population of approximately 1 million residents. Finland and the other Nordic countries are commonly considered the international hot spot for wireless communication, with the highest wireless penetration rates in the world and some of the world's largest wireless equipment manufacturers headquartered there. Vantaa Energy is rolling out broadband wireless networks to customers and Tele2 AB, the leading alternative pan-European telecommunications company, is the Internet service provider for the networks. Additional sales of Wi-LAN and Radionet products are expected to follow as Vantaa Energy moves into further phases of its broadband wireless network deployment. Additional information regarding Vantaa Energy’s broadband wireless networks can be found at www.wivanet.com. "After initial trials, we chose Wi-LAN’s LIBRA 3000 series products for our broadband wireless networks because they provide the throughput, non-line-of-sight capability, ease of installation, robustness and reliability we need for our bandwidth-intensive business customers and for our wireless backbone," said Kari Hytonen, Director, Electricity Networks, Vantaa Energy. "Radionet’s leading-edge broadband wireless products allow us to connect our high speed wireless links to residential customers and to set up Wi-Fi Hotzones in key locations. Our broadband wireless networks offer various services, including high-speed Internet access and hot spot services, over secure high-speed links." "With the assistance of Radionet and Tele2, we have now supplied LIBRA 3000 equipment to six of the nine 3.5 GHz license holders in Finland, including Vantaa Energy," said Adrian Wheeler, Regional Director, Europe, Wi-LAN Inc. "Vantaa Energy has a strong reputation and a large established customer base and value-added broadband wireless services provide additional sales to this innovative organization. Radionet has extensive experience in the Nordic broadband wireless market, having delivered networks to ten cities and three harbors in Finland and two cities in Sweden. Finally, Tele2, with extensive experience providing broadband wireless Internet service with Wi-LAN equipment throughout Europe, is an ideal partner for Vantaa Energy." "The network in Vantaa is the largest Wi-Fi Hotzone network in the Nordic region," said Henry Valtonen, Director of Sales and Marketing, Radionet. "Our equipment allows users to have Internet access everywhere within the coverage area, and Wi-LAN’s equipment provides the high-capacity non-line-of-sight capabilities that are needed for backhaul and the larger commercial customers." "Having Vantaa as a customer demonstrates another lucrative market for our products," said Nico Roelofsen, Vice President, Global Sales, Wi-LAN Inc. "The infrastructure, including advanced billing systems, right-of-ways and towers, and customer base that public utility companies possess make broadband fixed wireless access a natural value-added service that they can easily add to their service offering."
