WiLAN’s Technology Acquisition Program performs two functions:
- Increases the breadth of our licensing programs by introducing new technology portfolios; and
- Strengthens existing portfolios by adding complementary inventions
Bringing new and complementary technologies into our portfolio increases our value proposition by making it easier for current and future licensees to gain access to technologies that help improve or enable their products.
A couple common questions about our technology acquisition program are addressed below.
Q. Does the acquisition of patent inventions by WiLAN guarantee that an inventor or company will receive an income?
A. Yes.
Q. Will the income generated by selling patented inventions be less than/equal to/greater than the amount that could be received through a licensing partnership?
A. WiLAN will pay a risk-adjusted amount that is less than the potential licensing value of the patented invention(s). That the fee paid to acquire the patented invention(s) outright is upfront and guaranteed may be attractive to some inventors and companies.

The process we use to evaluate opportunities to acquire technologies begins with patent owners completing a Portfolio Intake Form. The information that you provide will serve to educate our team on the patents and the potential for licensing them.
